Review: The Vegetarian by Han Kang

About the book:
The Vegetarian by Han Kang (translated by Deborah Smith)
Published by:
Hogarth Feburary 2nd 2016 (english version)
Genre: Adult fiction, Literary Fiction
Pages:  188 pages

'' The feeling that she had never really lived in this world caught her by surprise. It was a fact. She had never lived. Even as a child, as far back as she could remember, she had nothing but endure. ''

Synopsis:
Before the nightmare, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary life. But when splintering, blood-soaked images start haunting her thoughts, Yeong-hye decides to purge her mind and renounce eating meat. In a country where societal mores are strictly obeyed, Yeong-hye's decision to embrace a more “plant-like” existence is a shocking act of subversion. And as her passive rebellion manifests in ever more extreme and frightening forms, scandal, abuse, and estrangement begin to send Yeong-hye spiraling deep into the spaces of her fantasy (from Goodreads)

My thoughts:

I can't rate this book. I finished it yesterday and I still can't wrap my head aroound this book. I don't know how to rate it because I know that while I read it, it wasn't like when I read a YA book, that makes me feel all the feels. With The Vegetarian was more on the quiet side. It wasn't until I finished reading that I realized how much of an impact this book had on me. The writing was very beautiful, quiet and dream-like. The book is very direct straight to the point, and yet not at the same time. I remember, close to the end when we have the point of view of Yeong-hye's sister I was saying to myself '' but can't she just go straight to the action'' because she's doing something in the present, and keeps having flashbacks so it goes back in forth. Now I understand you see, but while I was reading, it was more frustrating. So no, I don't know how to read this book. Also, the book is divided in 3 POVs : Yeong-hye's husband, Yeong-hye's brother-in-law (her sister's husband) and finally her sister. In the first part, we see her husband dealing with her deciding to be a vegetarian. I found this part difficult because of the difference of culture. I am not Korean and I live in Canada, my best friend is herself a vegetarian and so for me, being a vegetarian is a life choice that is ''normal'' it's not something that I could be against. But in Korean culture, I guess it's totally different, I saw a review on Youtube and the girl who knows a lot more about Asian culture than I do said that for Asian people, sharing food is a way to say ''I love you, I care about you''. After seeing this review, I understand more the perspective of the husband and Yeong-hye's familly with her refusing to eat meat at a familly diner for example. I liked the last perspective, Yeong-hye's sister. I think it was my favourite part. Yeong-hye's brother-in-law's perspective was the one I liked the least. His obsession with Yeong-hye just weirded me out. I don't know, I feel like he just took advantage of the situation. You will understang it if you read it. I already feel like I told to much so I'm going to leave it here. I hope it was not too over the place.

My rating: No rating yet
Who should read that book: You definetely have to be mature to read this book. It's not for kids because it deals with very dark topics.

Review : It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

About the book:
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
Published by:
Atria Books, August 2nd 2016
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary
Pages:  367 pages

''There is so such thing as bad people. We're all just people who sometimes do bad things''

Synopsis:
Lily hasn't always had it easy, but that's never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She's come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up- she gratuated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own businesss. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily's life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

My thoughts:

In the first couples of chapters, I remember I said to myself «This is so silly, I hate Ryle, he has the God complex, he's such a douche». Then... I kind of fell in love with him, not like I fell for Miles in Ugly Love, I still had a funny feeling about Ryle. I liked him, byt I fell like the relationship between him and Lily was...not meant to be? I dont want to say it was wrong in the beginning, they were good for eachother; Lily changed the way Ryle saw the world and vice versa. Ryle made her grow as a person and Lily made him grow as a person and I thought that was fantastic. That's when Atlas comes in. First I want to say that I loved the glimpses into the past throught Lily's journal I read about thow completly different love stories that were also kind of not different at all? I know it's not making any sense. But Atlas's love for Lily was so... delicate, innocent? He didn't want to rush her in anyway. And Ryle and Lily's relationship was all too fast once they got together, so it was different in that way. But both love were kind of doomed, at leat that's what I think. Am I rambling? Okay, so Atlas. DAMN ATLAS I LOVE YOU. BE MY BOYFRIEND. When I read that Atlas was in Boston I was like: OKAY, BE TOGETHER. I was thorn. I wanted Lily to give Atlas a second chance but I wanted to know where her relationshop with Ryle would go. And OOOH where did it go... I think I will end with this because I don't want to spoil it any further. I'll just say that this is such an important read, it impacted me in a lot of ways, it made me see things from another perspective.

My rating: 4,5/ 5 stars
Who should read that book: As I previously said, this book is so important. So I think everybody, EVERYBODY should read this book. I know I say that a lot, but really, read this book, it will change your perspective on a lot of things. I know it did for me

Bookish goals for 2016

Bookish goal N°1 Read 50 books : This will be my goodreads challenge for this year. I don't want to set it too high because I want to make sure I don't fail. So even thought I read 100 books in 2015, I want to set my goal to half of this number for 2016.

Bookish goal N°2 Read those popular series

  • Harry Potter (shame!!!!)
  • The Mortal Instrument & The Infernal Devices (yeah, i know, shame)
  •  Percy Jackson (double shame)
  • Vampire academy (shame again)
  • Finally I want to get caught on Throne of Glass (I'm currently reading Heir of Fire)
Bookish goal N°3 Read more classics : I haven't really read a classic before. Not in English anyways. So it's time for me to read things like The Great Gatsby and some Jane Austen.

Bookish goal N°4 Read more historical fiction I don't really read historical fiction but I really want to, and I have some on my shelf, i just don't tend to read them, I don't know why because I want to, they interest me and all, I just don't get to read them. But this year, I'll read them!!

Bookish goal N°5 Read > Buy. I really need to get my shit together. I need to stop buying books and let them sit on my shelf. I have been reading for a little more than a year now and I have some books that have been on my shelf for... a year. It makes me uncomfortable. (as of January 8th, I'm failing miserably)

TOP TEN BOOKS OF 2015

This list is in no particular order except for the top 3 books. Let's jump right in because my intros are lame!

10. SAGA volume 1-5 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples: I loved those graphic novels so much. The story line is so interesting and it's funny and fast-paced. The art is just down-right fantastic! I truly recommend it if you are new to graphic novels/comics. It's sci-fi-ish and I don't know why but it reminds me of Romeo and Juliette, except for like... you know... the final scene.

9. UGLY LOVE by Colleen Hoover: At first I was skeptic about Colleen Hoover because litterally everybody loves her novels and I was afraid that her books wouldn't live up to the hype. But I was wrong. Oh. So. Wrong. I loved UGLY LOVE, it was my introduction to the new-adult genre and it was just enough of everything. The romance was so angsty but it was good. And Tate. Like whaaaaaat Colleen are you spying on me? Tate was me on paper. She's a nurse, I'm a nurse and I adore orange juice and guess what, Tate loves orange juice. I don't quite remember the other similarities but I remember that the day I read it, I was wearing a Mickey Mouse uniform, and in a scene, Tate had a Mickey Mouse uniform. I was freaked out. But anyways, I love the book (: And also, I read Maybe Someday and I loved it. Colleen is a genius.

8. SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE by Morgan Matson:
I read this book in June or July and this book still sticks with me. I love that the friendship is the main plot-point and that the love interest doesn't distract us from the friendship. The list that Sloan gives to Emily inspired me to drive myself like Emily did. And the story was light-hearted but still had a meaning to it. If Colleen Hoover is my new-adult queen, Morgan Matson is most definitely my contemporary goddess. And I will read anything that she writes,

7. AMY & ROGER'S EPIC DETOUR by Morgan Matson: I know, another Morgan Matson book! What a surprise! At first, I wanted to combine the two novels on my list, but after thinking about it, I think the both deserve their own spot on this list because they both hold a special place but for different reasons and also, Morgan Matson ladies & gents. I actually read this one first and noticed that Amy makes an appearence in SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE and I think this is so cool. This book is so unique because Morgan Matson actually went trought the journey that Amy & Roger did. All the pictures you see in the book that are real and were taken by Morgan Matson herself. SO COOL RIGHT? And I should add that I love the touch of mystery that Morgan Matson puts in her novels. I just makes it right.

6. THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky: This book. THIS. BOOK. Was (I think) the first I read in 2015, if it's not, it was the second book I read in 2015. Anyways, I cannot begin to describe the effect that this book had on me. My friends were raving about it and I was in a corner like, sorry I do not know what life is because Stephen Chbosky didn't show me yet. And now I see. Okay, I'm getting a little over the top here. But damn this book was good. Charlie is life. Charlie is probably my long lost twin brother but my mom swears he's not. I cried for the last 20 pages and you know what... it wasn't even because of the «plot-twist». It was simply because I felt the story come to an end and (wow... so much vocabulary) I didn't want it to end. I could have been reading Charlie's journal for months and that would have been okay. I loved this book so much that when I tried to make my mom watch the movie and she talked, I closed the TV and told her that she wasn't ready. ( I was very emotional about this, rough times)

5.ATTACHMENTS by Rainbow Rowell: This book is her simply because I enjoyed it so much. It doesn't have a meaning or it didn't change my life or my perspective of it. It was simply so fun to read. AND PLEASE. Does anyone else thinks that Chris Pratt would make and excellent Lincoln ? AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT? Anyways, this was cute >9000 and so good and sweet and creepy (but good creepy I SWEAR)

4. ANNA & THE FRENCH KISS COMPANION TRILOGY by Stephanie Perkins:
This is actually 3 books but it's kind of a series (but not really even though I recommend reading them in order). The first book being ANNA & THE FRENCH KISS, followed by LOLA & THE BOY NEXT DOOR and concluding the companion trilogy, ISLA AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. These book were so cute, I read all 3 of them in like 2-3 days. I loved the romance and the dynamics of these books, I loved that I had closure for the first two books in the last book because the characters kind of know each other so it's really cool to have this kind of closure that we don't often have in contemporaries (we always want a few more chapters) I loved thistrilogy simply because it was really cute and romantic and gripping and from the first page, you are hooked.

3. THE LUNAR CHRONICLES by Marissa Meyer: So here we are, the TOP 3. I read all of the LUNAR CHRONICLES in 2015 and I absolutely loved it. Marissa Meyer is just genius at retellings and I can't wait for Stars above to come out in 2016 (short stories in the LUNAR CHRONICLES' world) and I'm excited for Heartless to come out too! ANOTHER RETELLING YEAH! Okay, I have to calm down. So just in case you have been living under a rock, THE LUNAR CHRONICLES is a series of 4 books: Cinder (retelling of Cinderella... obvioulsy), Scarlet (retelling of Little Red Riding Hood), Cress (retelling of Rapunzel) and finally Winter (retelling of Snow White). Okay now, nobody explained this to me so I'm going to explain this to you because if I had known, I would have read this sooner. These are not independant stories. In Scarlet you see Cinder and the whole series is about all of the character. You have to read them in chronological order and they make one BIG EPIC story. This series is so epic and so good I can't even begin to explain it. It has sci-fi aspects like people are living on the moon and Cinder (cinderella) is a CYBORG. Let this sink in for a second. How amazing is that? It's amaze-balls so go read it.

2. ME BEFORE YOU by Jojo Moyes:
I was scared of this book at first. «Why?» I hear you say. My answer to you is: Feels, my friend, feels. Every blurb on the book has the word «heartbreaking» or «cry» or something like that. But this is so much more than just heartbreaking, it's breathtaking, it is simply a true work of art. Jojo Moyes made me laugh in this book, and also she made me cry. And she made me fall in love with yet again, a man who has a health issue (looks at John Green furiously). The characters were so imperfect, they have flaws and it makes the story so much more realistic. They talked like real people and they thought like real people and they had issues... like real people. If you want a book that will sweep you off your feet and yes... make you feels ALL the feels (not just sadness I swear) pick up this book, you will not be dissappointed

1. THE STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL SORROWS OF AVA LAVENDER by Leslye Walton:
I don't know what to say. This book is the 8th Wonder of the World. It took my breath away. This novel has beautiful writing, the quotes are amazing and the characters are simply wow. The story is told in such a unique way trought 3 generations we see the flaws and the heartbreaks. And this book is just so perfect that when I finished the last page I just stared at the wall and kept playing the story in my head over and over. I wanted to re-read it again as soon as I had read the last word. I couldn't read anything for like a week or two after reading this book. Major book hangover. This book is fantastic and anything Leslye Walton will write, I will definitely read. I would even read her grocery list (this is not a John Green reference, move along). But really, I would read anywthing she writes. I think she is genius and I was devastated to know that this was her only book (for now)

Review: The Strange & Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

About the book:
The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton
Published by:
Candlewick Press, March 27, 2014
Genre: YA, magical realism, (awesome? is that a genre?)
Pages:  301 pages

''Love makes us such fools''

Synopsis:
«Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava—in all other ways a normal girl—is born with the wings of a bird.»
Usually I do my own interpretation of the synopsis, but for this book, I'll just put the goodreads synopsis because this book just overwhelms me.

My thoughts:

This is one of my favorite book of the year... Scratch that I think it is my favorite book of the year, of even... of all time. THERE ... I SAID IT! This book was... wow. At first I was not sure about it.. I was reading it... and I was afraid I was going to be disappointed. HAHAAHA I was a fool. I lied to myself even because it's not the kind of book I usually read I told myself, I won't like this book, it will take me forever to read it.... I read it in a night... litterally. For the first... 5 pages I was like yeah... this book is not for me i'll just put it down after this page...and I just kept reading... until there was just one page left and then i read this page too... and after I just stared at the wall and replayed the story over and over in my mind... I even considered to read it again as soon as I closed the book. I still, to that day, think about this book and I'm just overwhelmed. This book is a piece of art.  This book is everything I ever hoped for. I'd like to thank Leslye Walton... I'd like to thank Leslye Walton's parents for giving birth to such an amazing writer. This book was amazing. if the beautiful cover doesn't get you, the story will.

My rating: 6/ 5 stars (if I could)
Who should read that book: the entire population of planet Earth. Scratch that... the entire population of the solar system.. I'm looking at you martians.. I'll send you the book if I need to.

About the author:

«Leslye Walton was born in the Pacific Northwest. Perhaps because of this, Leslye has developed a strange kinship with the daffodil--she too can only achieve beauty after a long, cold sulk in the rain. Her debut novel, The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender, was inspired by a particularly long sulk in a particularly cold rainstorm spent pondering the logic, or rather, lack thereof, in love.

Leslye has an MA in writing and lives in Seattle, Washington. When she's not writing, she teaches middle school students how to read and write, and most importantly, how to be kind to each other, even on days when they really don't feel like it. She is currently working on her next novel.»

Friday Reads: Emotional Roller Coaster

It's finally Friday and I have the weekend off so I can read as much as I want!
I hope you survived the black friday sale as I did not go because I'm poor af
Today I wanted to do something new on my blog, Friday reads! with a little twist. I want to (i'll try to) have a theme for my Friday Reads. This weekend it's emotional roller coaster (you'll see why). so yeah... I suck at intro (:

First, I want to finish Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
(now you see why ''emotional roller coaster is the theme HA). I'm about 200 pages in and maan oh maaaan. (HAHA BOOK REFERENCE!). This book is so good. It's about a 26 years old girl, Louisa, who haven't done anything with her life and she works for that witty and sassy quadraplegic guy, Will. See, before Will was quadraplegic, he was the king of extreme things and he had done a shit tone of really awesome things with his life. And yeah, it's just the story of these two and what they learn from each other, I guess. Don't let the reviews on back of the book stop you. I know every review has the word ''heartbreaking'' in it BUT DON'T LET IT STOP YOU just read this extraordinary book.

When I'll stop weeping, I want to grab Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover. I hope it won't tear me apart like Ugly Love (also by Colleen Hoover). All I know about this book is that it's about a girl and her boyfriend cheats on her with her roomates / (now former) best friend. And she meets this guy and they create songs and you can listen to those songs while you read. But I also know Colleen Hoover's novels are known to have a twist that will break you in a million pieces. So I'm prepared (*puts on silly G.I Joe hat and grabs box of tissues*)

Finally, i'll probably be destroyed by those books and finish this awesome reading month weeping and trying to watch American Horror Story.

Review: Papertowns by John Green

About the book:
Papertowns by John Green
Published by:
Speak, October 1st 2008
Genre: YA, Contemporary, road trip
Pages:  332 pages

Synopsis:
Q AKA Quentin is in love with Margo, but for her, it's like he doesn't exist. Until one night where she's at his window, pulling him into an night of adventure. Then he's pulled into the adventure of finding Margo, because when he wakes up after an epic night, she's nowhere to be found.

My thoughts: I didn't like the book as much as I thought I would. It was suppose to be a book of epic adventure and roadtrip but it's just Q trying to find Margo because she's oh so missing from his life. He was fine without her before this night and she is known for disapearing... anyway. I hate it when a character gets attached so easily and that they think they know a person just by living accross the street from them.

My rating: 3/ 5 stars
Sad parts: No
Funny part: Sometimes

Action: Not really
Who should read that book: If you're a hardcore fan of John Green's writing, you'll like it.

About the author:

John Green is a New York Time bestseller author but he's also one of the vlogbrother on youtube, the other one being his brother Hank. He is a nerdfighter (''who fight for intellectualism and to decrease the overall worldwide level of suck''). He's famous for the beautiful romance in his books and his overall awesomness.
